Points to Emphasize

  • Christ’s crucifixion—Phil. 2:8; 27; John 19; John 10:15

Having lived an excellent human life for thirty-three and a half years after His incarnation, the Lord Jesus went to the cross. Crucifixion was the cruelest and most shameful way to die in those days. Yet we should not consider the Lord’s death as a sad and tragic event. His death was the greatest and most wonderful death in the entire universe. In fact, the cross was the goal of Christ’s incarnation and human living. On one hand the Lord was crucified by men, but on the other hand He went to the cross willingly in order to accomplish God’s eternal purpose (John 10:15). The cross was where He accomplished all His work of redemption so that man might be brought back to God.

[Read together from the Bible two accounts which show us what happened the day that Jesus died on the cross.]

  • Christ’s redeeming death on the cross

The death of Christ has accomplished many wonderful things for us. We are redeemed, forgiven, washed, justified and reconciled to God. Redeemed means a price has been paid to buy us back to God. Justified means God considers us to be as righteous as He is. Reconciled means that we, who were God’s enemies, have now made up with God.

Christ is the Savior; the cross is the means of salvation. Therefore, Christ crucified is the Savior who accomplished the way of salvation.
