Thoughtfulness

Week 20
Kindness (2)

In this block we discover that we are thoughtful; we plan ahead, we are kind to others, we can consider others and act upon it, and we can easily share. To highlight these precious traits, we compare these to specific animals that do not exhibit these traits.

Point to emphasize
We can treat others in a friendly way.

Sample content and conversation with children

  • Start the time by greeting everyone by name and saying “Hello!” When done, ask, “Why do we do this?” Because we are being friendly. We are glad to see each other.
  • Show a simple picture of a child in the car (where the child’s face is on the car window). What is this? That’s’ a child riding in a car. How many of you like looking through your car window? How about when you see another child in another car. What do you do? You wave at them! We do this because we are friendly. OR you can have two toy cars, and have a simple conversation- a child is in the red car and he the child who is in the blue car one waves at the other child. Then all of a sudden you see in another car a child like you! And they look back! What do you do? Maybe we smile [smile], or maybe we wave [wave]. Why do we wave? Because we are friendly! We are happy to see each other!
  • During this time of the pandemic, we can’t always go inside the person’s house but we can drive by their house and wave at them from our window. OR Even in situations when our parents are dropping off or picking something up at someone’s house and you can’t come inside the house and have to stay in the car, even from your car window, you can greet them and say “Hello!” or “How are you doing?”, “So good to see you!” (Use picture of children inside the car waving at someone standing in front of a house).
  • Chimpanzees are friendly to their own group. When other chimpanzees come, they chase them away. They are not welcoming or friendly. They do not want to “greet” anyone; they want to chase them away. [Show video of chimps chasing others.] As you are showing the video you can share with the children: “The chimpanzees in this video all live in the same place at a zoo. Yet they have their own groups and do not accept or want to play with others that are not part of their own group.
  • Aren’t you happy that we can be friendly to others? We can smile at others, wave at others, greet others, give them flowers or crafts as gifts to make them feel good. [End the time asking the children what are some other things we can do to show that we can be friendly to others?]

Suggested activities/games

  • I spy someone who….[Is wearing blue! I spy someone who has a bow on their hair! Have the children identify who.]
