Points to Emphasize

  • Darkness is the expression of Satan

A man living in sin is living in darkness. Sin causes man to be darkened. The more sins a man commits, the more he will be dull and darkened.

Darkness may be compared to a stop sign on a street corner. Darkness is a sign that we are wrong in some way.

When we are in darkness, nothing is real to us. On the contrary, everything is empty, vain. When we are in darkness, we do not have any reality because we do not see anything. Instead of the sense of reality, we have the sense of emptiness and vanity.

With darkness is falsehood, the opposite of the truth.

  • The proof of darkness—1 John 2:11
    1. Man does not know the origin of the universe.
    2. Man does not know where he came from.
    3. Man does not know where he is going.
    4. Man does not know his real situation. He is filthy, yet he has no consciousness of his filthiness.
    5. Man does not know that he is wrong, yet he is really wrong. He commits sin, yet he has no consciousness of sin—Eccl. 7:20
    6. Man turns the truth upside down. He takes right for wrong and wrong for right—Isaiah 5:20
  • The danger of darkness

Often when we are in darkness we practice things that are nonsensical. For example, if a young person is in darkness, he may criticize an older person [his or her parents]. This criticism is altogether nonsensical, for it is in darkness. This young person does not know what he is saying, and his criticism is vain and empty.

Darkness causes you to fall into the deep pit, death, and eternal perdition.

  • Man is not free

Satan moves within man’s heart and causes him to do things not of himself and beyond his own control. Satan uses various kinds of habits to anesthetize and ensnare man.

Satan has a power in man that no one can overcome. For example, dancing and drugs appear to be mere habits, but they are actually the power of Satan.

  • Man’s life is in Satan’s hand

Describe the real situation of human living: Satan has caused man to sin, to covet fame, to steal money, to love the world, to envy others for the sake of higher position, to betray others, etc. Men who do these things have been deceived by Satan.
