Awesomely and Wonderfully Made

Week 89
God also made animals male and female

In Psalms 139:13-14, David writes, “For it was You who created my inward parts; / You wove me together in my mother’s womb. / I will praise You, for I am awesomely and wonderfully made”. Awesomely, when translated from the Hebrew, means “with great reverence, heart-felt interest, and with respect.”

Our humanity is precious to God and to us because He Himself wove us in our mother’s womb and awesomely and wonderfully made us. We should appreciate how God created us, male and female. We must thank and praise Him for our humanity and do our utmost to preserve it.

Since there is such a swift downward current in our society today, we must preserve our children’s humanity by presenting to them the truth in the Bible regarding how God awesomely and wonderfully made them male and female. May the Lord use the topics contained in this block to help instill this truth into our younger ones to preserve them from the chaos in our society.

Point to emphasize
God also made animals male and female.

Sample content and conversation with children

NOTE TO SERVING ONES: It would be best not to use the term “families” when talking with the children about animals. Better to use “male”, “female”, and “babies”. The word family is better to use when we talk about our own families.

  • [Show picture #1.] Let’s say the names of these animals. [As you point they say, “elephants, deer, chickens, peacocks.”] How many animals are in each picture? [Two.] That is exactly right! Each has two because God made animals male and female.
  • [Show picture #2.] Look closely and tell me what is different about these two chickens. [Here are some of the answers the children might give: (1) They are different sizes and colors; (2) The bigger one has a larger comb-the thing on top of its head; (3) The skin hanging down under its chin is a wattle; (4) It is longer on the bigger chicken.] Now, what name do we have for this one? [Point to the rooster.] Rooster! And what sound does a rooster make? [Noisy response from the children.] And, do roosters lay eggs? NO!! [Say this with the children.] Roosters are male so they can’t lay eggs. Only hens [point to hen.] can lay eggs because they are female.
  • [Show picture #3.] Now, who can tell me which deer is male and which lion is male? [Let them answer.] How can you tell? [children should answer that the male lion has a mane around its neck and the male deer has antlers on its head]. Only female deer and female lions can have babies. Female lions work together to care for their cubs and hunt for food. Male lions guard the cubs and guard all the lions against their enemies.
  • [Show picture #4.] Who has ever seen a peacock? I think the only way to see one is in a book or at the zoo. What is different between these two peacocks? [Children might say that one is very bright blue and has a fan for a tail. The other is smaller and not so colorful.] Guess which one is the male? [Children guess this correctly.] Since the female is smaller and not so colorful, she can hide in the bushes and not be noticed.
  • [Show picture #5: pairs showing size difference.] What animals do we have here? [Let them say giraffes, elephants, whales.] What do we notice in these three pictures? [Let them say one giraffe is bigger than the other, same for the elephant and the whale.] That is right! God made the male animal bigger than the female one. Now, in these pictures, it is easy to see which one is the male elephant and which one is the female elephant. [Have a child point to the male and then the female.]
  • God made the animals male and female so that animals could have what? [Show picture #6. The children will say the word “babies” when they see the picture.] This is the way God created us, male and female; and He created the animals, male and female so there would always be babies. [Ask them what this baby animal is called and who its parents are.] God made baby animals so that they look so cute!
  • God was so good to create you and me as a male or female and it was so good that God made the animals male and female, too. That way we can enjoy seeing all the baby animals. We should all say, “Thank You, God” together.
