We Wonder

Week 27
We wonder why we need to put on a jacket when it is cold

[Note: The emphasis in this story is not on the dog that shivers. Our goal is not to give the answers to “Why we need to put a jacket” but to show that God made us in a way that we often wonder about the weather and can dress accordingly. To wonder why is part of the preciousness of humanity.]

Point to emphasize
We wonder about changes in temperature and dress accordingly.

Sample content and conversation with children

  • It is so wonderful that God made us in a very special way. God made us in a way that we wonder why things are the way they are. For example, when you are going outside the house, your dad or your mom might say, “You need to wear a jacket!” Have you ever wonder, “Why do I need to wear a jacket?” You might wonder, “Is it really that cold? Is it raining? Is the sun up?” God made us in a way that we all wonder…” I wonder what’s the weather like today?” and then, we can dress accordingly.
  • [Show picture #1] Sometimes the weather outside is… [Let the children answer.] Sunny!
[Show picture #2] Sometimes the weather outside is… [Let the children answer.] Cloudy!
[Show picture #3] Sometimes the weather outside is… [Let the children answer.] Rainy!
[Show picture #4] Sometimes the weather outside is… [Let the children answer.] Snowy!
  • Can we go out on a rainy day wearing shorts, flip-flops, and sunglasses? No, right! God created us in a way that we often wonder what the weather is outside, so we can plan what to wear!
  • God created dogs in a very different way. A dog does not wonder about the weather. Here is a video of a dog. [Show video below.] The dog was outside, it was really cold, and the dog started shivering. The dog never wonders what the weather is.

  • But, God created us in a very different way! We look out the door or through the window and we wonder…” I wonder how is the weather today?”
  • If it is sunny [Show picture #5] I wonder…how should we dress? Ask the children and wait for their responses (shorts, t-shirt, hat, sunglasses, flip flops)
  • If it is cloudy [Show picture #6] how should we dress? Ask the children and wait for their responses (long sleeve shirt, long pants, light jacket)
  • If it is rainy [Show picture #7] how should we dress? Ask the children and wait for their responses (long sleeve shirt, rain jacket, long pants, rain boots)
  • If it is really cold or even snowy [Show picture #8] we say “oh, it is chilly” or “it is freezing”; how should we dress? Ask the children and wait for their responses (warm clothes, coat, gloves)
  • I’m so happy God created us in a way that we can wonder what the weather is outside. Some people that were so curious about the weather went on to invent apparatus that can tell us how the weather is outside! So, even before we open our door, daddy or mommy already know how the weather is outside. I’m so happy God created us this way!

Suggested activities

  1. “Freeze game” Sing one of the children’s meetings song with the children and when the music stops, ask the children to freeze until the music starts again.

  1. Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Materials:

    • 2 cup corn starch
    • 1 1/4 cup unscented white hand lotion
    • 2-3 drops of peppermint extract
    • bowl
    • spoon

Process:
In a large bowl mix the corn starch, lotion, and peppermint oil. As you stir, the mixture will start to form into what looks like a snowball. Sprinkle a flat surface with corn starch. Knead the dough until it is a firm snowball that is not mushy or sticky. As soon as the dough holds together well, break into smaller balls and invite to continue kneading until it’s smooth.
