We Wonder

Week 30
We wonder about God

[Note: The emphasis in this story is not on the orangutans or even on answers about God. Our goal is not to give the answers to the “Why” but to show that the orangutans don’t wonder why. To wonder why is part of the preciousness of humanity.]

Point to emphasize
We wonder about God.

Sample content and conversation with children

  1. Today we are going to talk about someone we all wonder about – God!
  2. Start with the song “Who made the world so big and round.”
  3. Showing examples of creation [show sample pictures,] ask the children as you name the items:
    • Have you ever wondered about who created these things?
    • Who created [name an item in the picture (#1 to #4)]? God!
    • Who created you and me? God!

Sometimes we wonder about who created these things. God created these things. We wonder about God. Where is He now? Where does He live? Why can’t I see Him? How can He listen to all of us when we pray? [Reminder to the serving one: the point is not to provide an answer to these questions about God, but to make the point that we do ask these questions. Animals do not ask these questions.] God created all of us in a way that we all wonder about God.

  1. [Show picture of an orangutan (#5).] What animal is this? This is a type of ape, called an orangutan. Who has ever seen one at the zoo? They are very interesting and an intelligent animal who has the ability to reason and think. [Note: No need to say more about the orangutan.] However, no orangutan has ever wondered about God. The orangutan has never thought about God. They don’t wonder where things come from or who made them. No animal has ever considered that God is.
  2. There is God, and we are the only creatures who wonder about God. We wonder who created us and the things around us, we wonder what He looks like, where He is. We read the Bible to learn more about God and come to children’s meeting to learn about God. We sing songs about God. We pray before eating to thank God for our food. [See sample pictures of children’s meeting (#6), family praying before eating (#7), and reading the Bible (#8).]
  3. How wonderful that God created us with the ability to wonder why! We even wonder about God which makes us want to learn more about God. Thank You, God!
