We Wonder

Week 29
We wonder when we will grow up

[Note: The emphasis in this story is not on the grasshoppers or even on the matter of growth. Our goal is not to give the answers to the “Why” but to show that the grasshoppers don’t wonder why. To wonder why is part of the preciousness of humanity.]

Point to emphasize
We wonder about our height, when will we grow taller, and what we will be when we grow up.

Mark 4:27

Sample content and conversation with children

  • Today we are going to talk about how we wonder when we will grow up. [Show picture #1.] What do you see in this picture? What is this behind him? [Let them respond.] Right! The marks show how much we’ve grown! Do you do this at your house? Do your parents measure you to see how much you’ve grown? We all like to do this! We all wonder how tall we’re going to be. We all wonder when we will be taller.
    • [Show picture #2.] Have you ever wondered when will you be tall enough to reach for the snacks on your own? If you have ever wondered about this—raise your hands up tall!
    • [Show picture #3.] Have you ever wondered when will you be tall enough to wash your hands without using a stepstool? Now, if you have ever wondered about this—stand on your tiptoes!
    • [Show picture #4.] Have you ever wondered when will you be able to use the big bike? If you have ever wondered about this—hold on to the handlebars and pedal!!
    • [Show picture #5.] Have you ever wondered when will you be able to ride this scooter fast? If you have ever wondered about this—hold on to the handlebars, and stand on one leg!
  • We wonder a lot about growing up! We even wonder what we’ll be when we grow up. [Show picture #6: Collage of different occupations.] Have you ever wondered about this? [Have two or three children respond.]
  • No animal or insect ever wonders when it will grow. [Show picture #7 grasshopper.] Who knows what insect this is? It is a grown-up grasshopper. [Show picture #8 grasshopper.] Grasshoppers start out as tiny eggs. They are called hoppers when they come out of their eggs. These hoppers do not develop wings until they are full-grown grasshoppers. And as they grow they never wonder about it. They just eat and grow.
  • It is so good that we are not like grasshoppers. God created us in a way that we wonder how tall we will be and what we will be when we grow up.
