Ingenuity

Week 33
We can live where it is very hot because we have figured out how to stay cool

Ingenuity is defined as the quality of being clever, original, resourceful, and inventive. Only man was created by God with the ability to create and invent, especially when there is a need. In this block we will discover along with the children some of the things they sometimes take for granted. We have the ability to consider a situation and come up with a solution or adaptation. On the other hand, animals are not capable of thinking in this way. Ingenuity is a part of the preciousness of our humanity.

Point to emphasize
We are very good at inventing ways to keep cool.

Sample content and conversation with children

  • Today we are going to talk about how we are good at inventing ways to keep cool.
  • [Show picture #1]. What would happen if one day you are looking forward to spend the day outdoors but when you go outside it is really hot? We just don’t stay indoors because it is hot outside. We were created by God in a way that we are very good at inventing ways to keep cool.
  • What are some things we can do or use to keep ourselves cool? [Let the children answer. As they respond, show the pictures #2-8 of these objects or actions or show the objects if you have them with you. As the children respond, you can emphasize saying, “That’s right! You see? You are very good at inventing ways to keep cool. God made you that way.”]
    • [Picture #2] We have houses with air conditioning or fans to blow cold air around the room when it is very hot outside.
    • [Picture #3] We can wear short sleeves and pants in light colors.
    • [Picture #4] We can play in a pool or in a sprinkler to cool down in the summer.
    • [Picture #5] We also have refrigerators where we can keep cold drinks and popsicles and ice packs for hot days.
    • [Picture #6] We can eat something cooler to keep us cool, like salad, sandwiches, cold noodles, fruit smoothies and ice cream.
  • Animals can’t choose where in the world they want to live. [Show sample picture #7 of polar bears.] Polar bears can’t just live anywhere. They have to live where it is very cold, close to the North Pole, where there is a lot of snow and ice. Why do you think that is? [Wait for children to respond.] Polar bears have very thick fur. If they lived in a place that was warm, they would be too hot and uncomfortable. Just think about having to put on a heavy coat on a hot day and not being able to take it off.
  • But we are NOT like the polar bears! We can live all over the world, even in places that are very hot! God made us to be clever and creative, and we can live in places that are very hot because we have invented ways to stay cool. It is amazing that God created us in a way that we are so good at inventing things and ways to help us stay cool. I am so glad that God made me this way!
  • Make paper fan together. [See instructions in suggested activities below]

Suggested activities
Craft: Paper fan

Materials:

    1. Piece of Paper (sturdier will last longer than regular construction paper)
    2. Markers (or crayons)
    3. Tape

Instructions:

    1. Decorate your piece of paper in your desired design.
    2. Start at one end of the paper. Fold a one inch crease, and follow that by another one inch crease in the opposite direction. Repeat this until the entire paper is folded.
    3. Take one end of the folded paper and pinch it together. This will leave the other end open. Just fan out this end.
    4. Tape the pinched end together to hold together your fan. You can also just staple this section or tie a string around it – whichever you have available.
